The girls had a week off of school this October for fall break. This is the first year they’ve had a whole week off of school in the fall. So we put together a last minute camping trip!
We had a grand adventure to see the great Total Solar Eclipse™ of 2017!
We found out about the eclipse about six months ago. Looking at the path of totality, we realized that my uncle Noel and aunt Linda happened to live right on the Oregon coast, only a couple of miles outside the path! They were gracious enough to host us for the event!
The kids were sick today.
Darla was sluggish and didn’t want to go to school today. She said her tummy hurts. Both girls are usually pretty honet and accurate about their stomachs, and if they say it hurts, there’s a good chance they’re actually going to puke sometime soon.
Unfortunately, I still had to get Kirin to school, and you’re never really sure if they’re not just faking… so we took a chance and packed them off to school.
We didn’t make it.
School started up for the girls this week. They’re both excited to be back. We met new teachers and found old friends.
Collecting gift ideas for people here.
Kirin is off at my parent’s house this week. The house is so quiet without her around! It’s hard to see her grow up so fast!
Tonight’s train layout.
First pumpkin of the season!
Guess what I got for Father’s Day!
Kirin and I wandered around Reid Park this Saturday. Couldn’t pass up this shot!
Kirin had her 3rd birthday party up in Phoenix this past weekend. Much fun was had by all!
We had a grand time painting this past weekend!
We drove up on top of the rim near Sedona and gave Kirin her first taste of snow. We built quite a fine snowman that many people enjoyed. More pictures to come.
You can see a qik video of us playing in the snow:

Angela and Kirin paint some turkeys.
Climbing in the backyard trees.
We visited the horses at one of Angela’s friend’s ranch. Big and small!
We wandered through Idea today, and found this cute little girl who wanted us to take her home with us. So we did. Yay!
Friday night. Time for bed? No… time to run around and dance! This is Kirin running around to Lunch Money’s “It Only Takes One Night To Make A Balloon Your Friend”. Great song.
I’ve posted short video compilations of Kirin’s First and Second years. I put them in a new Friends & Family section on the site, which you have to log in to see. I’ve made a couple of accounts already, please contact me if you want to see them.
Since kids imitate pretty much anything you do, Kirin is now getting into electronics projects. Luckily I saved all my kits from when I was a kid, so she doesn’t have to steal my current toys.
Kirin had her 2nd birthday in April. During her party, she joined my dad on his pans.
We got a package today, and it came with a bonus toy for Kirin. Bubble Wrap!
We went to the Tucson Zoo today with some friends. Kirin had a lot of fun looking at all the animals!
We went to the Tucson Children’s Museum over the weekend again. Its a pretty nice place to just let the kido run wild. She just had a great time!
Well, she’s 15 months old now, so we figured it was time to begin music lessons.
Kirin’s been interested in widgets lately. Knobs, handles, light switches etc. Instead of continually shooing her away from them, we figured we’d make some just for her. Kirin's Activity Board
So we’re working on eating real food now. She has goldfish down, and crackers. Sweet potatoes well, that’s another story. We’ve also got more pictures from her birthday party up on flickr. Kirin eats sweet potatoes
Angela and Kirin enjoy a ride on the elephant! We went to the fair yesterday. It was windy, and we walked too much for Angela’s foot, but we had a mostly good time. Kirin was pretty enthralled I think, not smiling much, but huge wide eyes taking it all in. Angela and Kirin on an elephant at the Pima County Fair
Kirin at the park We went to the park today. Kirin actually climbed up onto the play-set, and then proceeded to climb all over it. Its pretty amazing how large of a step she can scramble up now. I’ll get some more pictures posted soon. update: I’ve got more pictures uploaded to flickr, along with some vids below.

We took Kirin to Oreganos last night and introduced her to pizzookie. I think she likes it. Kirin discovers Pizzookie
The big news lately is Kirin is starting to stand up on her own, and sort of stagger forward. Looks like we’ll be progressing to toddler stage soon! cringe [QUICKTIME http://homepage.mac.com/estranged/movies/KirinStanding.M4V 480 360] [QUICKTIME http://homepage.mac.com/estranged/movies/KirinWalking.M4V 480 360]
Kirin from Christmas 2007. Internet here is too slow to download the videos..and when it is faster it cuts out before the video opens……….any chance you could also post a few photos? Thanks Linda
Kirin is really making huge strides on crawling speed. I think last weekend she was barely moving forward as much as she was moving backwards. Check out the video from today We also have a second tooth poking through on the bottom. Looks like she’ll get her two front teeth for Christmas.
We have crawlings! We’ve had some scooting around for a week or two now, but actual forward progress is now being made in ernest.
Well, one tooth at least. Kirin’s first tooth is slowly poking its way through on the bottom. This of course seems to be leading to more nights of no sleep! Yay!
Last week we took Kirin with us to San Francisco. It was her first plane trip. She did amazingly well, considering we had 4 delayed airplanes. I was going to ZendCon 2007, a conference for PHP programmers. Since the hotel was paid for, all we had to do is get Angela a ticket, and bring her and Kirin along for the ride. The conference was pretty much a geek-fest. Hundreds of programmers milling about, going to talks given by other programmers.
Kirin got a new bouncy plaything yesterday. She’s getting to the point where she really wants to be sitting upright, and she isn’t liking sitting in the swing or other chair we have much these days. She still likes the swing for getting to sleep, but during the day she definitely would rather be sitting up. There’s a short video of her playing in her new chair also.
We finally got up to Phoenix this past weekend. Angela’s grandmother Carol finally got to see Kirin. Kirin has great grandparents! Its a bit too hot still to really travel comfortably with Kirin, and the last few miles she was getting pretty unhappy. All in all she traveled very well. We went to Tracy’s birthday party Saturday evening, then stopped by the Fischer abode for an early dinner, then alas it was back to Tucson.
Linda found some of Kat’s baby clothes and sent us an awesome care package! Most of the clothes are a bit big for her still, but she wore (and spit up all over) one of the cutest little two piece dress outfits today! Kirin thanks you for the box! Kirin in a box You are welcome, Kirin! –Linda
Well, Angela is doing really well. She’s feeling good enough to actually start going back to work in a limited fashion. Unfortunately, the original idea of bringing Kirin to work with her isn’t really going to work they decided. I had doubts about this idea, so it’s not really surprising to me, but still it means we had to seriously start looking at daycare. Daycare for a vulnerable little person who is not quite 4 months old scares the bejeezers out of the both of us.
Kirin was just too happy when playing with her alphabet toys today!
Michele picked us up last night to take us to the bead club. The clouds were gray and low, the wind pushing leaves about lazily. The monsoons are unpredictable. No guessing where or even if the storm would break. So we decided to cautiously venture out to the bead store. We drove north up to Skyline looking for a sandwich shop on the way. As we went north, the rain began to splatter lightly and the wind picked up a little.
Angela goes to the doctor….again!
The leg is healing well. It needs to grow more bone and have more range of motion. I am permitted to walk short distances without the boot at home. Outside I am to use the boot and ditch the walker. Well, I am more than a little off balance so I have been using a cane. Indoors, without the boot, I am struggling and still need the walker. Despite all these rules, I am much more mobile, independent and feeling better.
We’ve gotten a few complaints that there were no new pictures of Kirin up in the past few weeks. Very sorry for the delay! She’s eating and growing fast. She’s starting to sleep longer at night, averaging about 4 hours at a time. That’s up nicely from the two or two and a half hour blocks she was doing a week or so ago. We’ve even gotten lucky a few nights with some six to eight hour blocks.
First week of therapy went well. They are taking it easy on me. I’ve been walking alot, which is nice. Pool therapy is fun. A few more weeks till July when I go back to the doctor. Can’t wait!
Kirin went to the doctor last week and weighed in at 10 pounds. She is growing quickly. This puts her squarely in the 50th percentile for size. She also got a bunch of shots. Poor thing! She didn’t like that much but she calmed down quickly. They gave her the cutest little spot band-aids! Every one smiles when they see Mark pushing my wheelchair while I push the baby stroller! Got to get a picture of that.
We all went to the orthopedist on Tuesday. The x-rays are looking good. The doc said I can walk while wearing my fancy boot and start physical therapy. HURRAY!! I have been walking about cautiously since then using my walker. I hope when I feel stronger and get used to walking again that I can get rid of the walker. Maybe use a cane instead. I feel like a granny! In physical therapy I get to play in the pool. I’ll get to walk in the water without the boot! The doc hopes to get rid of the boot in another 4 weeks or so.
So now that I am up and moving around, I have to think about the full-time job offer I got from my favorite place to work. They say I can bring little Kirin to work with me. I just don’t know how that will work out. As for the big picture, things are looking better!
